CARE OF MARK
MORNING: First thing when you wake up (OK, second, but the way this won´t interfere with your daily routine is if you start right away), get a can of Nine Lives out of the fridge or the drawer/cabinet (if it´s a new one). Cut it in half and keep the rest in the fridge. Cut a tiny bite and hide a ¼ pill in it, administer. While he´s eating, measure 1.5ml of lactulose and mix into a bigger bite. While he´s eating this, mix half a teaspoonful of fiber (it´s in the fridge too) into what´s left. You´ll notice that of this last part he´ll basically lick the liquid out; if you remember before you go add a little water from the fridge and mix, then he´s on his own. Make sure he has fresh water to drink (changing, not adding, every other day is fine). If there´s food left over when you come back from work you can add water to that and he´ll finish it.
EVENING: about half a cup of the dry food (he likes it better, but it´s not as good for his intestines, so you should never give him dry food instead of wet food)
If he seems uninterested in the medicated food you can get his attention by placing (not mixing) two or three pellets of the dry food (in the large “Peace be to this house” can) on top of it. Make sure he sees you do this so he gets them while they´re crunchy, like cereal, otherwise the stratagem won´t work. This used to be his regular dinner but now I´m using it strictly as a special treat so he gets his medicine. He´ll approach the plate to “rescue” the pellets and end up eating the rest too. Until he reads this, of course.
WHEN YOU GO TO THE BATHROOM: Remove and flush anything solid in the litter box (explore, he may have buried it) and move the magnet behind the mirror to whatever day of the week it is. I´ll quiz you about this when I call (right after inquiring about your own health) so you can also “chart” his #2´s in the Magnetic Poetry calendar in the kitchen (how appropriate!).
IF YOU SEE HIM STRAINING (or you don´t see anything solid in four days) give him a 1 cm dab of hairball control (right out of the tube, in the kitchen drawer) before breakfast, and suspend dry food that night. Try instead to have him sip a spoonful of laxative (lactulose, in film roll container in drawer) before dinner (if he´s not interested, mix it into his dinner, wet food with a spoonful of and NO fiber or water (so he gets most of the laxative). Repeat the next day, as soon as you see something solid you can go back to the routine.
IF THERE´S NO SUCCESS: His vet is the Humane Society, 59th between 1st and 2nd , 752 4840, his file is under Mark Perazzo. Call and say “I don´t really need an appointment, I just have to drop him off to be deobstipated” so they don´t make you wait. Tell them it´s rather urgent so he gets admitted. Don´t take him to the Animal Medical Center before you talk to me. Normally he´ll be ready for pick up the following day.
TO PUT HIM IN HIS CAGE: First of all, get him into a closed space (the bedroom or a closet) so he can´t see you. Then get his cage (in the bathroom closet, inside the big one), take it to the bathroom and open it. Put his blanket in the cage and turn off the light. Open his door and grab him, before he knows it he´ll be in the cage and ready to go.
